History in a Pecan Shell

La Fruta had had a school before the railroad arrived but wasn't thought of as a town until 1888. Two stores soon opened and a post office was granted in 1892.

While the post office packed up and moved to Mathis, La Fruta continued to prosper as a watermelon shipping point. The site of the highway 359 bridge was once a ferry crossing back in the 1870s. The ferry was replaced by a bridge in 1915. According to the Handbook of Texas, today "Nothing remains to mark the site of La Fruta."
