a region with a flavor of its own. Spanish architecture
(or a reasonable facsimile thereof) is everywhere, and most yards have miniature
botanical gardens -- rooted specimens of cacti, succulents and tropical plants
each in their own number 10 can. Snowcone stands are nearly as numerous as gas
stations and in some cases they're the same.
Tour Los Caminos
Del Rio and see the brick buildings of Henry Portcheller in Roma
and Rio
Grande City. Watch parrots roost for the night at old Fort Brown or
in the Brownsville
Cemetery. Meet Kenedys not from Massachusetts and find out why Alice
doesn't live there anymore. Everybody doesn't necessarily love Raymondville,
and Mercedes
wasn't named after Porfirio Diaz' wife, no matter what Donna
tells you. So what if it's a long drive. You can spend the night in Kingsville
or Floresville
on the way down. It's one of our favorite regions and with good reason. |
